Engineering Department

Welcome!

Welcome to Engineering Department! We are glad that you are here! We will have the opportunity to learn more about various engineering skills and concepts. Even better, we'll get to actually build stuff to use at the Space Center!

What you'll do as a member of Engineering Guild

As an a member of the Engineering department, expect to dive into multiple engineering areas, learning about electricity, materials, programming, and more. You will learn skills to create things with your brain and hands. You'll also learn how to work in with others in teams and groups. You may even get the opportunity to lead a project yourself!

If there is a need at the Space Center (say, a new prop is needed for a mission), then you can flesh out the idea after talking with flight directors ant/or the Engineering Department Head. You will need to fill out a project proposal (which includes at least a timeline, budget, and a design). The project proposal is submitted to the Directorship of the Space Center for approval. After approval, you get to work on the project! If for some reason during the project, the design, timeline, or budget needs to change, you will need to talk to the Engineering Department Head. Once the project has been completed, then we will celebrate your accomplishments!

What can you do to start participating in Engineering Guild?

About

What is the purpose of the volunteer programs at the Space Center?

Each department at the CMSC has a specific purpose for helping the Space Center and the community grow. In Engineering Department, we help provide opportunities for volunteers and staff to learn and develop new skills in Engineering through maintaining, creating, and developing props and technology for the Space Center with particular focus on the simulators. Most importantly, we teach skills so that participants can go on to bigger and better things! While there is no set curriculum in this department, ultimately the participants are in charge of their own learning. The attitude in the Engineering Department is if you encounter something that's more advanced, try to work hard to learn it, and use others' experience to help you out. The best way to learn things is to try your best, and when you get stuck, ask for help.

In short, the Engineering Guild is here:

  • To teach the Volunteers

  • To benefit the Space Center

  • To serve Alpine School District and Community

How does the Engineering Guild achieve that?

The Engineering department is project centered. Participants will learn through student led, hands on activities. These activities, or projects directly benefit the Space Center, but also serve the purpose of teaching those who participate in the projects. While engaged in Engineering Department, participants may expect to

  • Be introduced to engineering concepts

  • Create new physical items for the Space Center

  • Repair and to maintain items at the Space Center

  • Build and maintain software for the Space Center

  • Let participants be in charge and manage projects

  • Help with service projects around the community and Alpine School District

  • Compete in a friendly atmosphere in various fun competitions

Who's in charge of this all anyway?

The Department Head is currently Matt, who studied Computer Engineering at BYU. Matt has been working with the Space Center in some capacity for over 10 years. Matt currently works full time at a software company in the Salt Lake area. Matt enjoys Ultimate Frisbee, baking delicious treats, and spending time with his family
