School counselors work collaboratively with students, families, school administration and community members to implement a preventive, school counseling program, which includes early warning systems for identifying students who may be engaging in harmful or risky behaviors, as well as developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive interventions and supports addressing those behaviors and promoting student resilience and success. This includes brief Individual and group mental health services.
School counselors recognize that each student possesses unique interests, abilities and goals, which will lead to various future life and career opportunities. Collaborating with students, families, educational staff and the community, the school counselor works to ensure all students develop an academic and career plan reflecting their interests, abilities and goals and including rigorous, relevant coursework and experiences appropriate for the student.
Counselors provide direct instruction, team teaching, parent workshops, and learning activities which promote: Academic and learning development, life and career development, multicultural and global citizenship development and social/emotional development. This includes but is not limited to Social Emotional Wellness lessons, character building, life skills, and career develeopment lessons.Â
Utah school counselors demonstrate accountability, social justice, and systemic change. Implementing a comprehensive and systemic College and Career Readiness School Counseling Program provides school counselors, teachers, administrators, other school personnel, and policymakers a framework that includes strategies and practical tips on how to work more effectively in their schools and communities. The data-driven process helps school counselors and other stakeholders select and implement appropriate supports and interventions that close equity gaps, demonstrate program effectiveness, and improve college and career readiness for each student.
