Reading Literature and Informational Text Standards
Ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of the text.
Identify main topic of a multi-paragraph text.
Recount stories and determine the central message, lesson, or moral.
Describe characters and explain how they respond to events and challenges.
Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story.
Describe the structure of a story.
Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters.
Explain how illustrations contribute to understanding characters, setting and plot.
Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in technical procedures.
Compare and Contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic
Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in the text.
Know and use text features to locate information efficiently and show how illustration and text contribute to understanding.
By the end of the year, read grade level books independently with purpose and understanding.
Reading Foundations Standards
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Writing Standards
Write opinion pieces that introduce a topic or state an opinion, supply reasons, using linking words, and provide a concluding statement.
Write informative/explanatory texts, to introduce a topic, use facts and definition, and provide a concluding statement.
Write well-elaborated narratives using thoughts and feelings, and provide a sense of closure.
Participate in shared research and writing projects.
Speaking & Listening Standards
Participate in collaborative conversations with peers and adults about grade 2 topics.
Ask and answer questions in complete sentences.
Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant details.
Language Standards
Demonstrate command of grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Demonstrate command of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
