What Is PAWS?

PAWS is our school-wide acronym that supports positive behavioral Intervention and supports (PBIS). This muli-tiered framework allows schools to be a more effective place and it establishes a social culture and behavior supports needed to improve social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for all students. Throughout the first few days of school students at Wilson will learn the expectations for their classroom, hallway, playground, cafeteria, bathroom, and bus expectation. As parents, we ask that you discuss what they are learning about the expectations and discuss the importance of these behaviors. Daily students will receive PAWS tickets that will be entered to win in a weekly drawing. One or two students from each class win in the drawing and then go to the AMAZING PAWS cabinet for a prize. Bi-weekly the teachers and staff choose a PAWS pupil that exemplifies PAWS behaviors throughout the month. They will receive a certificate, a prize from the cabinet, and invite a family member to eat lunch with them the following Thursday.

Student Absences

Please make sure to verify your student's absences. It is considered unexcused without a phone call, email or note. Please call 358-5700, email the office at blowe@alpenaschools.com, or log onto your Parentvue account to excuse them.

Dismissal/Bus Route

If you have a change in plans that you need to notify your child of regarding end-of-the-day bus/pick-up, please call the office before 3:30 p.m. This allows us time to relay messages and prepare a smooth transition to the end-of-the-day procedures.

Parents, please call the office for any changes in your child's bussing situation. You may not write notes for the bus drivers to follow. For bus drivers to make a change they have to receive a note from the office staff so they know that this has been approved by parents or guardians.

***To check your student's bus route information

Go to ParentVue using the app or website, and select student info. Then scroll to the bottom and click additional information for their bus routing schedule provided by day as well as AM and PM. If it is incorrect or needs to be changed then there is an automated transportation request on the first page at the bottom of ParentVue.

Parent Drop-Off or Pick-Up

Please do not drop off students earlier than 8:44 AM

If your child is getting dropped off late or being picked up early we ask that you please come into the office to sign them in or out to make sure that information is accurately being put into Synergy accounts.

If you are dropping off or picking up your child from the pick-up line please refrain from exiting your vehicle. If it is necessary for you to get out of the vehicle please pull into a parking space so we continue the flow of traffic and keep everyone safe.

Emergency Drills

Michigan State law requires a school to schedule five fire drills, two tornado drills, and three school safety/security drills (e.g., lockdown, shelter in place, etc.). These drills will occur throughout the school year. We will be having drills starting this week. Please discuss with your child the importance of following all safety procedures and protocols as we participate in these very important drills.  We practiced a fire drill and tornado drill this week at Wilson.

Wilson School Holiday Program

Wilson Community School will be holding our annual holiday program on Monday, December 16th at 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm.

Report Don't Repost

The single most effective preventative tool regarding school safety is if you See Something, Say Something. If your child sees or hears something that is concerning, they should say something to an adult or report it online using ok2say.com. On an annual basis the district and law enforcement are seeing messages shared repeatedly on social media, and often the same message is edited to replace the school name and then reshared again. When students or adults just repost messages on social media and don’t report through the appropriate channels, it perpetuates fear and creates additional safety issues. It diverts resources from the school and law enforcement, complicates investigations, and makes it challenging to share accurate information with parents in a timely manner, it makes us less safe.   Please REPORT and don't REPOST.

Draft Strategic Plan to be Shared

Strategic Plan

Here are the working documents of the 3-5 year strategic plan. These documents will guide all the work that we do in our building to ensure our students, families, and employees have an excellent experience at Alpena Public Schools.

New ELA Curriculum

Parents, you may have noticed that your child has a new English Language Arts curriculum this year. Some of the highlights include:

Spelling focuses on patterns rather than a word list

All grades are focusing on a common topic

Students will each receive a unit magazine to read, write on, and interact with

Every grade level will have daily handwriting which includes cursive handwriting

Students will see strategies over and over throughout the year and the next grade level

Stay tuned to Benchmark Advance unit updates from your child’s teacher.
