How does Veggie Box Work?
Spring registration is open until Friday, December 5th, or when all 100 spots are full, whichever comes first. A Veggie Box subscription is $324 for the spring season. The Spring Veggie Box season runs for 12 weeks, beginning February 24 and finishing May 14. Members pick up a re-usable box once a week at Allen Neighborhood Center, full of produce from local small farms. Optional add-on subscriptions can be selected to customize your weekly box for an additional charge. There are two standard payment options (lump sum payment and split payment), as well as a reduced cost option for neighbors experiencing hardship or paying with an EBT card.Â
What's in the Box?
The Spring Veggie Box includes seasonal assortment of farm-fresh produce. Spring boxes contains greens most weeks: things like mixed salad greens, cooking greens, lettuce, baby greens, microgreens. Because early spring in Michigan is still very cold, the season starts out with a lot of storage crops: things like potatoes, onions, radishes, carrots, beets. Towards the end of the season, spring produce varieties increase, and you will start to see some of the Midwest's most exciting and treasured crops: asparagus, peas, herbs, garlic scapes, rhubarb, & sometimes even ramps. This is an example of which veggies and fruit are typically available. Weather and farm circumstance will impact what is actually offered.
Why Choose Veggie Box?
When you sign up for a Veggie Box, you're choosing to support the local food system as a whole. This model brings growers and eaters into a community of mutual support. Veggie Box keeps your grocery dollars local, and helps small-scale, sustainable farming exist as a viable way of life.
Each week, we purchase the best in-season produce from an array of local farmers, and pack it carefully into a box for pickup at the Allen Neighborhood Center. Each week's box includes a newsletter with recipes featuring that week’s produce, a farmer spotlight, educational information about our local food system, along with other tips and facts. We source from local, professional growers who utilize sustainable growing practices and stringent food safety measures to ensure a quality product. Veggie Box is not designed to be the cheapest food you can buy, but rather a reasonably affordable and convenient way to move towards local food systems that are rooted in equity and sustainability.
The Veggie Box allows you to make one single decision now that will support dozens of local businesses every week, reduce the distance your food travels to get to your table, and create a robust system that provides our area with good jobs and healthy foods. Health, stability, equity, and connection - in one delicious package!
