After emotional goodbyes to family and friends, our hopeful immigrants board the S.S.Szeryk and begin their journey to America. The experiences on the ship really depended on whether a passenger had enough money to purchase a first class ticket or could only afford a ticket in steerage. First class passengers enjoyed spacious cabins, professionally prepared meals, and entertainment. The steerage passengers on the other hand, traveled to America in tight, crowded cabins where sickness was common and the food unpleasant. While sailing across the ocean our passengers were forced to deal with a storm, an unconscious captain, sickness and more. Do they make it to America or not?

Meet Marcela! She’s a 15 year old girl, born and raised on a poor olive oil farm in Extremadura, Spain. Marcela’s family barely had enough money to withstand the needs of her family so she is headed to America in the hopes of a better life.
Peter S. Lavey
Meet Peter! Peter is a 26 year old Irish man with a wife and two children. Potatoes have been a large part of his life as he is a potato farmer. He wants to live in America and grow potatoes for the locals. He hopes to eventually bring his family over to America.
Anne Braun
Meet Anne! She is 16 years old and lives in Hamburg, Germany. Her father works in a factory downtown, but the money he is paid isn't enough to support the family of five. Anne is going to America for freedom from the unfair laws of Germany.
William Dudley
Meet William! William is 18, and has grown up in a small town in England. His stepmother was mean to him and his brother, so he wants to leave to find a better life in America, hopefully as an accountant.

Meet Byung! He is (or used to be) a 38 year old rice farmer from South Korea (which is ruled by the Japanese government. He has a brother and a father and they all live together in a small cottage by a river. He has a goal to raise enough money to bring both his father and brother to the safety of America.
Evelyne Jones
Meet Evelyne! She is 17, from England, and is going to America to get a job in a hospital to get experience so she can be a doctor. Her grandparents died of tuberculous and because she was unable to afford a ticket to America she got a nanny job but she had to leave her sister behind.
Frank Marino
Meet Frank! Frank Marino is a 30 year old Italian man. He was raised in poverty, as his father left his family at a young age. He's been running from the Mafia for 16 years and is moving to America to try to get away from them for good. His American dream is to start a new life and forget the past.

Meet Elisabeth! Elisabeth was born in Germany. She is currently 12 years old and is living on a farm with her sister and her mean husband (Karl). Soon the farm she lived on went out of business and her family went in debt. Elisabeth is going to America were she hopes to find a job on a farm or in a factory.

Meet Lloyd! He has lived all his life in Paris and is 18 years old. He lives in a small hut near the Seine River. Lloyd has no life in France and wants to go to America. He wants to get an education in America and live a good life.

Meet Giovanni! Giovanni grew up with his family in a small town in Italy. Around the age of 20, he took up the job of carpentry and has become very skilled at it. Word traveled around the town about a new land called America, His American dream is to have comfort and money while maintaining the same job.

Meet Clara! Clara’s family lived in a small town in England. Clara has always wanted to help her parents and get a job but nobody has hired Clara. Clara's dream job in America is to be a doctor but she is lacking in education. Clara loves her sister Emily and they both plan to sneak on the ship to get to America!

Meet Armandek! Armandek is a poor farmer living in Warsaw, Poland. He hates his current living situation and hopes to prosper in America. He plans to get an education to further the career he chooses. Armandek is spending all his life savings to get onto the boat. He hates Poland because of the lack of opportunities.

Blythe wants to go to America to get a better education that she got in Oxford. She wants to bring her mom over so she can get a nice house and live the American dream. Just before boarding the ship her mother gave her their life savings so she could travel in style!

Meet Fred! He is a 21 year old man risking it all just to go to America. He is from Manchester, England. He has worked on his farm for his whole life. He is very poor, and can barely afford his ticket to America. He works on his farm all day and eats only potatoes. Manchester is way to overcrowded for him so he hopes to move to a small American town.
