Chromebook 1-to-1 Program

All incoming Year 5 & Year 6 students will be issued a school purchased Chromebook, stylus (pen), power adapter, and protective carrying sleeve.

The school issued 1-to-1 Chromebook program will allow for students to use the device within the classroom and at home in a supportive educational manner. Chromebooks are very popular for the education market due to the hybrid blend between traditional laptops and tablets. Students will be able to use Chromebooks to do many traditional laptop functionality while also being able to access Android-based apps and camera features that were popular with iPads.

Parents will not have to purchase any device at the start of the academic year as the devices are now purchased and managed by The Alice Smith School. They will need to be returned to The Alice Smith School upon completion of the primary program or in the event a student withdraws from school. All required apps will be purchased and deployed automatically by the Technology Department, which will allow for families to have an easier time in managing the devices. 

The Chromebooks are purchased and owned by The Alice Smith School, which will allow for the school to be able to control and customize the intended learning experience. Unlike Bring Your Own Browser (BYOB) devices, the school-owned Chromebooks can be centrally managed by the IT department, which will allow for enhanced safeguarding protocols even when the devices are not directly connected to the school WiFi. This will ensure that a student may only install school approved applications and extensions, which will significantly reduce distractions and misuse. 

Classroom teachers will be able to use a tool called Securly Classroom, which will allow a teacher to control the Chromebooks of student's during lessons to ensure students stay on task during technology based lessons. 

With Securly, Parents will now receive access to a website where they will be able to set up and control category-based content filtering. Parents will be able to set up alerts and receive reports for how their child is using the Chromebook while at home. This flexibility will allow for families to decide how a Chromebook should be used while not at school and ensure proper safeguarding protocols are in place.
