This week I had the pleasure of going to the Haringey Music Festival at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall with members of our choir. We had a fantastic evening and enjoyed listening to young musicians from Haringey as well as singing alongside other Primary School choirs from across the Borough. It was a truly memorable event. At Alexandra, we deeply value music and are proud of the growing talent within our school. Our fabulous Musical Showcases are a great chance to see our children perform so don’t forget to check dates for the upcoming shows.
Many of you may have noticed the ongoing development of Wood Green Common near our school. Over the past year, our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils have been actively involved in a plant fostering project, where they have carefully grown and nurtured flowers and shrubs. These plants will be transplanted onto the Common next month. Be sure to look out for Alexandra’s contributions when the Common officially reopens in June!
Lastly, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Red Nose Day fundraiser! Your donations will go towards programs that help keep children safe, healthy, and educated. We truly appreciate your kindness and support in making a difference.
Here are some of our Year 5 & 6 children participating in the plant fostering activities this week. They really enjoyed coming together with their plants and planning where they will plant them on Wood Green Common.
This week, the whole school took part in an exciting Science Week, packed with hands-on experiments, investigations, and discoveries! Each year group explored different scientific concepts, from building paper cup telephones in Year 2 to creating chemical reactions in Year 1.
We were thrilled to see curious minds at work, asking questions, testing theories, and learning through exploration.
A huge thank you to Mr McKenna for inspiring us to take part in this event.
Nursery have been reading stories about different animals this half term. For Science Week the children did some Deep Sea Yoga Discovery, learning about different sea creatures as well as developing their self-care skills. Afterwards, we used our imagination and creativity skills to invent our own animals.
Our book this week is ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ which is about a plastic bag floating in the ocean. We did an experiment with some objects in our classroom to see which things would float and which things would sink.
Chemical reactions! We learnt that a reaction can happen when two things don’t like each other and begin to fight! We used bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and food colouring to explode our naughty alien invaders! We had so much fun!
For British Science Week, we learnt about how sound is made by vibrations and made our own 'cup-a-phones'. We learnt how the sound waves travel along the string and that it only works if the string is taut (not slack)!
They also discussed the science behind being able to hear each other by only using a piece of string. It was fascinating as they also watched a video exploring how the vibrations of our voices travel through sound waves.
It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience!
This week, Year 6 had a fantastic trip to the local post office where they each posted their very own letter to the Prime Minister! It was a wonderful hands-on experience, allowing the students to express their thoughts and engage in the process of sending an important message.
We're excited to see where their letters go!
Colombia Class had an amazing trip to Railway Fields Nature Reserve, where they explored a variety of habitats, including woodland and ponds. The children observed the different plants and creatures that thrive in each environment, deepening their understanding of nature and biodiversity.
It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience and the class loved discovering the hidden wildlife all around them!
Chile Class also went to the Railway Fields Nature Reserve this week. They learnt about different habitats: meadows, woodlands, rivers and ponds. They looked closely at these habitats to try to spot animals and plants living there.
They also looked for mini-beasts and looked closely under logs and rocks to try to find the creatures that lived there.
Year 6 had an exciting and educational experience exploring a variety of fascinating artefacts from Islington Library Services in preparation for their upcoming trip to London Zoo. The children were eager to share their findings with the class through an engaging presentation. Their topic, Living Things and Their Habitats, sparked thoughtful discussions as they learned more about the diverse creatures and environments they will encounter on their adventure next week!
Thank you to Year 5 Puerto Rico for their wonderful assembly. They confidently shared their learning about the environment and encouraged us all to help look after the planet.
Thank you to Year 1 Cuba Class for sharing their learning over the last term during their assembly this week and thank you to our parents for attending.
At Alexandra, we love our music! This week, we celebrated our musical learning with fantastic Musical Showcases in Nursery and for Years 1 and 2. It was a wonderful opportunity for our young musicians to share their enthusiasm, talent, and hard work with their peers and teachers.
A huge thank you to Ken, whose passion and creativity bring so much joy to our musical learning. Your dedication makes music an unforgettable experience for our children!
Every week, we celebrate our wonderful students. Here are some students receiving their certificates this week. Stars of the Week received certificates for one of our school values - kindness. Then we had prizes for Sports Person of the Week, NumBots and Readers of the Week. Finally, Colombia won the trophy for the Best Attendance. What a lot to celebrate!
Our sandpit has been freshly refilled, and the children couldn’t be more thrilled! From the moment they stepped in, they eagerly began exploring the texture of the sand, letting their creativity run wild as they built, shaped, and experimented.
Playing in the sand is not just fun—it’s a fantastic way for children to develop their fine motor skills, teamwork, and imagination. Whether they were building castles, digging tunnels, or simply enjoying the feel of the sand between their fingers, the joy on their faces was unmistakable.
It has been wonderful to see the children fully engaged in open-ended play, working together and sharing ideas. The sand pit has once again become a hub of creativity and discovery!
We look forward to seeing even more fantastic creations and imaginative play in the coming weeks. Happy digging, everyone!
Our KS2 boys have kicked off their very own Boys' Book Club. The group has been having a fantastic time sharing stories, discussing their favourite reads, and swapping book recommendations. It’s a great way for the boys to bond over their love of reading, and we’re looking forward to seeing their reading journeys unfold in the coming weeks!
On Tuesday, 18th March, our school choir had the incredible opportunity to perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall as part of the Haringey Schools Music Festival. It was a truly spectacular occasion, and our talented singers did a fantastic job representing our school with pride and enthusiasm.
A huge well done to all our choir members for their dedication and hard work in preparing for this special event. We are incredibly proud of you!
A special thank you goes to Ms. Kennedy and Ms. Clarke for their support in making this experience possible for our children.
The children made chocolate rice crispy cakes today. First, they melted the chocolate and mixed in the rice crispy. After making sure their rice crispy were covered in chocolate they scooped them out and placed them in cupcake cases. They later decorated them with sprinkles. They placed our cakes into the fridge for 20 minutes. They looked amazing when they came out. They also tasted great too!
During this two-week monitoring cycle, I had a focus on books and found that all year groups are teaching humanities, with similar lessons across the groups. Year groups have included a longer writing task for history. Fieldwork is happening, and Forest School is helping with outdoor learning in the local area.
The use of themes is also linking learning across different subjects in the curriculum. Resources from the Islington Library Service are supporting teaching and learning, providing valuable materials for students. The children enjoy learning outside and have lots of discussions about what they are learning in humanities.
At Alexandra, we prioritise the safety and well-being of all our students. As part of our uniform policy, we have clear guidelines regarding jewellery that must be followed by everyone.
To ensure a safe and focused learning environment, children may only wear:
Small stud earrings (one pair)
A simple analogue or digital watch (without smart features)
For health and safety reasons, no other jewellery is permitted. This includes bracelets, necklaces, rings, or smartwatches. We understand that some families may have cultural or religious traditions involving jewellery, but to maintain consistency and safety for all, there are no exceptions to this rule.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing this policy with your child. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Thank you for helping us keep our school a safe and inclusive space for everyone.
Every week we celebrate our students’ dedication to their maths learning. On TT Rockstars, our children can master their times tables. On NumBots, they can master basic number facts and their quick recall. Here are pictures of our recent parties:
Best attendance for this week:
KS1 – Well done Costa Rica Class 97.12%
LKS1 – Well done Argentina Class 97.46%
UKS2 – Well done Espana Class 99.23%
At Alexandra Primary, we are focusing on ways to improve attendance and ensure that every effort is recognised. While we continue to award 100% attendance certificates at the end of each term, we also want to celebrate the small steps children take towards improving their attendance.
To do this, we are now giving out 100% attendance for the week stickers and sending text messages to parents to acknowledge and encourage progress. Every step towards better attendance counts, and we are proud of our pupils for their efforts!
