Definitions:
- Bullying:
- Bullying is “a variety of negative acts carried out repeatedly over time. It involves a real or perceived imbalance of power, with a more powerful child or group attacking those who are less powerful” (ACSD Policy 7380).
- “When someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself” (Dan Olweus).
- Cyberbullying:
- “… Cyberbullying is an attempt to display power and control over someone perceived as weaker” through the use of any type of information technology and …
- Bullying can take three forms:
- Physical (including, but not limited to, hitting, kicking, spitting, pushing, taking personal belongings);
- Verbal (including, but not limited to, taunting, malicious teasing, name calling, making threats); and
- Psychological (including, but not limited to, spreading rumors; manipulations social relationships; or engaging in social exclusion, extortion, or intimidation (ACSD Policy 7380).
- Bullying may occur on or off school grounds;
- May involve student use of the District Internet system or student use of personal digital devices while at school (cell phones, digital cameras, personal computers) (ACSD Policy 7380).
- School districts can discipline a student for off-campus conduct that “adversely affects the educative process or endangers the health, safety, and morals of students.”
