The WJEC Eduqas GCSE Drama specification is designed to give learners a broad and balanced experience of drama. The specification is designed to integrate knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed across a range of dramatic activities.
Component 1: Devising theatre (40%)
Learners will create, develop and perform a piece of devised theatre using the techniques of an influential theatre practitioner or a genre e.g. Theatre in Education, Physical Theatre or Bertolt Brecht.
Alongside their performance, learners will be expected to write a 750-900 word portfolio and complete an evaluation of the final performance.
Students will be supported throughout the process and will take part in workshops to gain a clear understanding of different practitioners and genres.
Component 2: Performing from a Text (20%0
Learners will select and rehearse an extract of a script within a group. This will be performed during the final year of the course to a visiting examiner.
Component 3: Interpreting Theatre (40%)
This component requires learners to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed through the study of a performance text and through responding to live theatre
Section A: Set Text
Learners will study a set text practically. They will be expected to answer questions focusing on acting, designing (lighting, costume, sound and set) and directing. Demonstrating their knowledge of the context and characters within the play and how they would apply this knowledge to performance.
Section B: Live Theatre
Learners are required to analyse and evaluate one piece of live theatre viewed during the course. They will be expected to analyse and evaluate how meaning is communicated by the director, designers and actors.
Learners will be expected to work in groups selected by the class teacher and a willingness to perform is essential.
