GCSE Classical Civilisation
Our GCSE in Classical Civilisation provides students with a broad, coherent and rewarding study of the culture of the classical world. They study elements of literature and visual material from Greece and Rome developing an understanding of their social, historical and cultural contexts.
What will I study?
There are two components to this GCSE exam. At Alder Grange we study ‘Myth and Religion’ for Component One and ‘The Homeric World’ for Component Two. Both of these units offer our students a fascinating and varied insight into the literature, art, culture, festivals and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome.
How will I be assessed?
There are two exams and both are 1 hour and 30 minutes long. For the Component One exam, students use a range of written and visual sources to explore both ancient Greece and Rome. For Component Two, students are examined on an in-depth cultural study of Mycenae and study of extended extracts from Homer’s text ‘The Odyssey’.
What will I learn?
Students will know and understand the surviving literary and material remains of the classical world. They will understand, interpret and analyse a range of evidence from classical sources. Moreover, students will evaluate and use this evidence to form their own judgements and responses, and present these in a clear, concise and logical manner.
Where will GCSE Classical Civilisation take me?
GCSE Classical Civilisation will equip you to go on to further study in many areas. After taking this course, you could embark on A-level Classical Civilisation where you will look in greater depth at the topics. Alternatively, because of the varied nature of the topics we study in this GCSE, it is perfect for anyone interested in history, art literature, architecture, culture, creative subjects, philosophy, politics, sociology… Most importantly, it’s a fun and fascinating subject that you will enjoy!
