2024 UAF Upward Bound
Session 1: Introduction to T3 Experience - June 2-29
Session 2: Advanced T3 Community Engagement - July 7-24
The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is accepting applications for the Upward Bound/T3 Alaska Summer Program. The Upward Bound (UB) Summer Program is available at no cost to all students at participating schools who are interested in learning about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) careers and pursuing post-secondary education. To best meet the needs of new and returning students, the program has an introductory and advanced session.
Introduction to T3 Experience
The first session, Introduction to T3 Experience, is held June 2-29 and welcomes students who have completed grades 8-10 and are new to the Upward Bound and T3 Alaska programs. The Introduction Session has three strands that explore earth monitoring sensors, drones, and Makerspace equipment.
Deadline extended. There are spaces available in the Remote Sensor Strand in June and Ocean Strand in July.
Advanced T3 Community Engagement
The second session, Advanced T3 Community Engagement, is held July 7-24 and invites advanced students who have completed grades 10-12 or returning summer program students who seek to continue their learning. Students attending the Advanced Session will apply their knowledge to concepts relating to energy, climate, and oceanic concerns. Advanced students can apply for a work-study stipend.
Deadline extended. There is still space available in the Sensor strand in June and Climate and Energy strands in July.

In-the-field experiential learning with off-campus field trips!
Students who attend either session of the UB Summer Program will travel to sites such as Fairbanks, Anchorage, Valdez, Cordova, Chena Hot Springs, and Kotzebue. An important component of the program is in-the-field experiential learning with off-campus field trips. In addition, students will tour the UAF campus, learn new technology skills, participate in research, and engage with community partners. The UB Summer Program encourages personal growth, teaches marketable skills, and integrates students into communities for future intern and career opportunities.
Many Alaska Upward Bound programs utilize T3 Alaska approach to educate students in STEM technology and to provide pathways for students to meet community partners and address real-world problems. UAF is thankful for the collaboration and partnerships with the Alaska Blue Economy Center, Juneau Icefield Research Program, Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP), Chena Hot Springs geothermal facility, Alaska Center for UAS Integration (ACUASI), the Alaska Earthquake Center, Alaska Department of Transportation, and Denakkanaaga.
