The 2020 Upward Bound season is right around the corner. This year we are offering a NEW Work Study Program to complement your summer experience. This is a great way to learn how your work in Upward Bound is related to career opportunities. The best part about the Work Study program is that you get PAID $900 to learn!
The work study program has 3 main goals. In this course you will; Build Personal Skills, Sharpen Career Choices, and Gain Work Experience!

The program has three main units:
1. Career Readiness (June 8-12) 10hrs
2. Mini Job (June 15-26) 20hrs
3. Job Shadowing (July 6-31) 30hrs
As you can see, the Work Study program lasts a whole month longer than the normal Upward Bound curriculum. The good news is that students can work at their own pace and complete the tasks and assignments on their own schedule.
To complete the work study curriculum, students will spend about 5 hours per week on their assignments, work, and reflections.
Some things to look forward to:
Coronavirus Impacts
Covid-19 has presented an interesting challenge to the job shadowing component of the Work Study Program. In some communities, students will be able to participate in normal, in-person, internships while others might not have those opportunities.
Flexibility is our friend this summer. Our focus is to learn how to make a living and there are a TON of different ways to do that in Alaska. Students can be creative when identifying jobs that they would like to learn more about. Students can even record hours for subsistence activities like hunting, fishing, and gathering. There are so many possibilities!
Meet the Coordinator
Brian Reggiani will be coordinating the Work Study Program this summer. Brian grew up in Cordova, AK before attending college at UAF. Now he lives in Fairbanks and works with rural high school students at a UAF program called GeoFORCE when not working for Upward Bound. Brian's favorite hobbies are hunting, fishing, and boating. This summer he has a goal to remove 10,000 pounds of trash from the Chena River with his jet boat. As of May 26th, he has collected 2,500 pounds!
