Hibernating species profoundly decrease metabolic demands of their tissues and show resilience to injury during the hibernation season, I believe studying this phenomena provides the unique potential to identify novel therapies for inducing metabolic suppression and preventing protein wasting in compromised populations.
We study how hibernators regulate their metabolism, and how in turn metabolic products and processes can influence or reveal aspects of hibernation physiology. We work on the whole-animal level, as well as the multi-organ, protein and metabolite level.
