President's Message

Welcome to a new year!!

As the incoming president of Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics, I welcome you to a new school year. Each fall, we greet students with anticipation of what we can accomplish together during the school year. At no other time during the year are we filled with excitement and energy for what we do and what we hope to accomplish.

As president of Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics, it is my hope that we will be able to support you and your students in this journey. Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) believes that all students deserve the opportunity for high quality math teaching.

This year, we are hoping to provide a variety of professional development opportunities for educators across the state. ACTM is co-sponsoring the first every Alaska Cross Content Conference in September. The Alaska Cross Content Conference is the work of the Alaska Science Teachers Association, the Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Alaska State Literacy Association and Alaskans for Language Acquisition. Ron Clark will kick off the conference. We are excited that juli Dixon and her daughters will be joining us and sharing their journey through learning math. Jennifer Lempp will be presenting on math workshops. Marilyn Burns’ Math Solutions will be offering an extensive workshop on the mathematical practices and a leadership strand. And those are only a few of the sessions! There will be opportunities for teams or individuals to meet one on one with Juli, Jennifer, or other experts to gather ideas. We hope that you will consider joining us September 29th to October 1st in Fairbanks.

Another thing that we are working on is building membership. Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics has created a Facebook group, Facebook page, Twitter handle, and Instagram account. Most of these accounts are @AKMathTeachers. We are hoping to share ideas and thoughts with educators in Alaska who are interested in math teaching and learning as well as educating the community about what we are doing. We hope that you will join us – even if you are not a member.

So welcome to a new year – one filled with lots of hope and ideas!

Wishing you a wonderful year!
