Happy 1st Day of School!
Snowflake Quilt
Materials needed:
Colored paper, scissors, glue
Pick one 12"x12" paper as the background.
Cut 4 snowflakes out of 4 different colored papers that measure 3" x 3".
Glue 4 squares of color down first and then glue snowflakes on top.
Objectives: Demonstrate knowledge of Amate Bark Painting processes by simulating the color and texture of the paper and produce a visual representation of an Amate Bark Painting using similar colors, symbols and subject matter.
To create a simulated bark paper, have students crumple up brown paper. You could use paper bags, craft paper, or heavy brown paper. Dilute some India Ink with water and have students paint the ink wash on the crumpled paper. The crumpling produces creases, which traps the diluted India Ink, thus producing a texture similar to actual bark paper. Students should lay the paper out on some newspaper, as flat as possible to paint the ink wash on, using foam paint brushes. Allow to dry thoroughly before moving to the next step.
Draw the design out in chalk before painting. Mistakes wipe away easily. Use stylized designs and decorative borders similar to that of the original bark paintings, or allow students to create original subject matter depicting some event in their lives. I have several stencils of birds and flowers that may also be used with students that need them
Tempera paint is best because of the flat finish it produces on the paper; however, almost any colorful media such as acrylic or oil pastel would work fine. Use the brightest colors available but definitely use white. You may also use white to brighten up spaces before applying the color, for example pink shows up better on the paper if there is a coat of white behind it.
When the painting is completely dry use black markers to outline the shapes in the design.

ART CLASS with MRS. DABAT
Week of March 22, 2021
Materials Needed: Paper plate, Paint, Black and yellow paper, Scissors, Glue
Begin by having students paint rainbow stripes on the front of a paper plate. If you would like to use crayons, markers, or colored pencils, that is great. Go for it!
Let dry and flip it over to paint the back as well. Blow dryers are great if you're impatient!
Grab a scissors and start at the outside of the plate to cut spirals. Cut out a black pot of gold and glue it to the end of the plate.
Glue on some yellow circles to make the gold...you can add some sparkles too! Poke a hole in the middle of the plate and add a string to hang it up!

Paper Plate Woven Bowls
Materials Needed:
Paper plates, pencil, scissors, yarn, glue, paintbrush, something round to trace...
INSTRUCTIONS:
Before you start weaving, you’ll need to prepare your paper plate.
Mark your plate:
Trace a circle in the center of your paper plate. This will be the base of your bowl.
Next, make an uneven number of marks, evenly spaced, around the edge of the paper plate. We are doing 9.
Then draw a straight line to connect each mark to the circle that you drew.Cut along each line, stopping at the circle that you drew.
Now, make cuts on either side of each cut to form a V.
Fold each section at the pencil circle line and bend the sections up to form shape of your bowl. If any of the sections overlap, trim to make the V wider so there’s no overlap when the bowl is formed.Begin weaving
Slip a piece of yarn between one of the cuts, leaving a tail, which you can hold down with your thumb while you get started. Weave in and out of the cuts, around and around the bowl.
NOTE: Keep the sections of your bowl folded upwards as you weave. If you flatten them down, your weaving will not resemble a bowl.
To change colors
To change to a new color, snip your yarn, leaving a tail, and tie on a new piece of yarn, leaving another tail. You can trim these tails and tuck them in when you finish weaving.Finishing your weaving
Stop weaving about 1/8 of an inch away from the top of the bowl. Cut your yarn and leave a tail which you will tuck in shortly.Fold the edges
Fold the remaining top edge of each section down and crease firmly to create the bowl’s rim and to ensure your weaving doesn’t slip off the top of the bowl.Decorate the inside base
Brush some glue over the inside base of the bowl, and use a long strand of yarn to create a spiral to cover the base of the bowl.Tuck in tails
Using a pencil, tuck in any loose tails of yarn.Your woven bowl is complete and now ready to store trinkets and treasures in!IGN
Black History Month : Focus on ALMA THOMAS
"RESURRECTION" by Alma Thomas
This painting was unveiled as part of the White House Collection
in 2015, hanging in the dining room.
Alma Thomas is the first African-American woman
to have art in the White House Collection!
MATERIALS NEEDED: Paper, paint, brushes, paint tray/cups, pencil, compass
DIRECTIONS
Plan out a design. If the painting will be centered around a circle,
use a compass to draw the circle first. The painting does not
have to be centered around a circle or shape.
Be creative with the plan!
2. Paint the circle (or shape) solid with tempera paint. Paint dashed lines around the circle/shape until the paper is full.
Be creative with color choices, size, and positioning.
Use a variety of different brush sizes.
EVALUATION
Did the student plan a composition based on the style of Alma Thomas?
Did the student use a variety of different line/dash sizes?
Did the student plan and use a variety of different colors?
Did the student fill the entire paper with dashed lines, completing the painting?

FIZZY HEARTS!
Materials Needed: Paper, pencil, cup of water, paintbrush, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, eye droppers, small cups
Procedures: Draw a big heart on your paper.
Paint your heart with water.
Sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda all over the wet heart.
Pour a small amount of vinegar into a few small cups.
Color the vinegar by adding food coloring to it.
Using the eyedropper, drop some vinegar onto the heart and watch what happens!!!!
Repeat with different colors.
Warning: This might get really wet so I recommend blotting the heart with paper towels when needed.
This is more of a process based art project, or an experiment; so the end result is not the goal.
Observing the reaction the baking soda has to the vinegar is the goal of this lesson.
