8:45 - 9:45 am | Teaching Distracted Minds: Old Challenges, New Contexts | Dr. James M. Lang

Faculty frequently express concerns about the distractions and distractibility of our students, but our real focus should be on how we help students achieve attention. These sessions draw upon scholarship from history, neuroscience, and education in order to argue that distractions are endemic to the human condition, and can’t be walled out of the physical classroom or online course. Instead, we should focus on creating educational experiences that cultivate and sustain attention. Participants will learn about a variety of potential pathways to developing such experiences for their students.

10:00- 11:00 am | Faculty for an Inclusive Campus and Classroom| Fleurette (Flo) King

The world is shrinking and yet the world is for students to explore and apply their learning. Faculty play a critical role in the diversity, equity, and inclusion of campus strategies. Students should graduate with tools to apply their experience to diverse communities based on their college education. Key strategies will be shared to facilitate inclusion in and outside the classroom for student success.

11:00 - 12:00 pm | Lunch

Lunch will be provided for in-person participants.

12:15- 1:15 pm |Managing Dominant Narratives & Microaggressions in the Classroom| Fleurette (Flo) King

Faculty will understand dominant narratives and microaggressions and their impact on the curriculum and student engagement. Instructors will discuss inclusive strategies for the curriculum and actions to prevent microaggressions and address dominant narratives in their academic fields.

1:30 - 2:30 pm |What Inclusive Instructors are Doing: Applying Research-Based Practices to Enhance Student Learning| Dr. Quatez "Q" Scott

Today’s college classrooms are more diverse than ever. However, research shows that many college instructors still teach using conventional pedagogical methods (Loya, 2021). Such methods often do not consider the learning experiences and cultural differences among students in equity-seeking communities (I.e., BIPOC, LGBTQ+, class, etc.). As a result, pedagogical barriers are naturally embedded in today’s curriculum—even if not intentional. Over the last two decades, more literature has explored emerging and effective strategies used by college instructors to promote equitable learning environments. This session actively helps instructors identify some of the most common challenges that impact today’s learners as well as reflective and transformative ways to shift classroom dynamics to enhance academic performance and instructional delivery.
