“The Journey That Makes Us” (2016)

Author: Alan Song

Title: Let’s Go Anywhere

School: Lakefield College School

Media: Acrylic paint, sharpie, tape transfer.

Description:

My artwork has three layers in total. The bottom layer is meant to be an old wooden style drawing board. The second layer contains four main parts even though some are covered by the third layer. The main theme of the second layer is the idea of a barrier, difficulties and different selections of our life, so I chose to represent this idea using a maze, spider webs and tubes. The top layer shows a traveller facing the vast mountain area and thinking about where to go.

The traveller is just like us; when we are given different options in our life, our choice may change our future life and no one knows who we will be in the future. That is how people are different from each other. For me, “The Journey That Makes Us” means “what makes us us” and my artwork shows the answer. Just like what its says, “let’s go anywhere”, because there is no right or wrong for our future life.

“The Journey that makes us” (2016)

Author: Martina Ledesma Senior 6 H

School: Belgrano Day School, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Technique: Food coloring, acrylic and ink on paper

Description:

A vivid representation of what it means to grow and change, expressed through the juxtaposition of metamorphosis and color.

In this piece, nature acts as the axis that supports the process of evolution. The ripeness (maturity) of the fruit (the beast). Several elements of nature are also expressed: the blues as wáter, the warmer tones as fire, the purples and greys as earth. At the same time, the yellows represent the sun; the sun you used to always draw at the upper-right corner…

Personally, it depicts that growing up constitutes a beautiful process.

“The Journey that Makes Us”, is a category that is representative of the piece United as One. In this piece of art, several images of nature which are united by their elements, including earth, water and air. Just as these images flow together so effortlessly, to create one great image, the stages and events that occur in life flow together through a cause and effect manner, where various decisions create results. Metaphorically, the bodies of water throughout the world can be representative of the “journey” through life. It can lead you to many different places, just like this piece. They may seem different when looking at individually, however when you change your perspective and look at the greater scheme of things, there is realization that everything is all connected united as one.

“The Journey that makes us” (2016)

Author: Olivia Jones, Year 13

School: Box Hill School

Technique: Acrylic on paper

Description:

“Metamorphosis a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one” -- an important stage in the ‘Journey that makes us’

Reflected in the eye of this woman is a butterfly on its metamorphic journey, emerging from its chrysalis, breaking free from the last of its bonds to enter the final stage of its life journey. The woman is crying as she reflects on her journey and how experiences have shaped her and those around her - and how she longs to break free of her final bonds in a metamorphosis on the journey that makes her who she is.

“The Journey that makes us” (2016)

Author: Shea Salvi – Year 11

School: Box Hill School

Technique: Pencil/Acrylic

Description:

The journey of our lives is displayed in our faces and held internally. This pencil drawing of a young woman invites the viewer to look behind her eyes to question the journey that has formed her. It is up to the viewer to decide and internally debate how the exposed internal scars on her eyes, cheek, nose and lips have been made on her journey , are they scars? Or are they reflections of her experiences and memories?

“Life is journey not a destination” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

This piece is a representation of who I am. I used a metaphorical character ‘Daphne’ to portray my values since I was named after her. It is an image of a tree with strong roots, trying to find a way of its own. Each day, I grow and learn new things about my self. This art work symbolizes my ongoing journey of creating myself and the process of metamorphosis from a childhood to adulthood.

Name of the work: “Change in time”

School: Enka Schools, Istanbul, Turkey

Technique: Digital manipulation on printed surface

This piece reflects the changes and decisions we made throughout our lives beginning from our birth (which is represented in the middle by an embryo) I was inspired by LGBT. With this piece I want to show how our journey is changing since where we began and how we should adapt ourselves to those changes. Throughout the adaptation we need to respect and understand each other and live in piece all together. This is the journey of the humankind.

Name of the work: “Waterfall” “Hand”

School: Enka Schools, Istanbul, Turkey

Technique: Digital manipulation on printed surface

These two art pieces complete each other and present a deep connection that reflects the situation on our world. The first piece that is called “Waterfall” represents the inner peace that we all should have and the other one represents the reality. In the second one (Hand), I used a child’s face to give the effect of purity, naivety to show how far the children are away from their dreams and peace all over the world. The first one shows the ideal, utopic world that we should be living in. I put a butterfly on the top to show how short actually our lives are and I used a women’s back and the waterfall to give that purity again to make the connection between two pieces that I have done. Also, I wanted to make the viewer understand that the journey we are in is too tiny, too short and too underestimated. We can not and should not pretend nothing is happening. To conclude these two pieces deeply shows how the world should be and the world is now, today. And also what we live in our past will effect our journey and our perspectives about life.

Artist: Ela Kalaycıoğlu

Name of the work: “Dove of Peace”

This piece dedicated to the people who going through that kind of journey in their lives.

JOURNEY THAT MAKES US

Life is an endless journey. Memories and experiences are the two significant things that have made us as who we are today. We may not be very successful in what we are doing or are supposed to do, but the endless striving for memories and experiences will definitely make us happy and allow us to be proud of ourselves. In this work, we have tried to bring out our memories and experiences that symbolize the journey that have made us. They are now fading away with time but are still playing an important role in our lives.

The main purpose of our video is to portray the different experiences that we have in our lives especially the hands on experiential learning like dance, music, sports, academics that contributes to our holistic development and how they shape us. While the cinematography of this video has been done by Shubh Agrawal and Sukhnoor Singh, the editing has been done by Shubh Agrawal, while the description has been written by Shradha Kapoor. It took us almost a day to figure out how to make a time lapse which could represent in all aspects the journey of a Genesian, be it a junior or senior. We are thankful to our teachers, Mrs. Archana Goyal and Mr. Haninder Singh for their able guidance and specially our Principal cum Director, Mr. Pramod Sharma for giving us this golden opportunity.

This piece responds to the theme ‘The Journey That Makes Us,’ by referring to the personal journey the student has taken from her home country of Latvia to the United Kingdom and representatives of her personal identity. Ina responded to this title by considering key things that represent her personal identity with a reference to Latvia and her love of Art, something that has always been a passion in her life both in Latvia and here in the UK.
