On Friday, Nov. 23, and Saturday, Nov. 24, a group of students from Abington Heights High School traveled to New Jersey to produce the esports state championship through Garden State Esports at Georgian Court University. This tri-annual event happens in the fall, winter, and spring and is hosted by various colleges each season.
Just like regular sports, esports has different seasons with different game titles; the fall season features League of Legends, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros.
The fall finals had over 2,000 attendees and is the largest scholastic esports competition in the nation. Over 60 teams competed for championship titles, and 128 students competed in walk-up tournaments.
This year was also a record event for Abington Heights as we had 14 students who helped produce the event, all of them girls. One of the most important things Garden State Esports prides itself on is being an encouraging space for everyone, and having an all-girls production team was huge for them.
It is also incredible that an organization in New Jersey repeatedly asks Abington Heights, a school in Pennsylvania, to produce their events. This shows what an amazing job our students who produce this event do with it.
