Abington Heights High School is lucky enough to have a wonderful team of both teachers and administrators who work hard before and after school hours to make the school experience the best it can be.
However, only a select group of individuals are hardworking and dedicated enough to serve multiple roles as a teacher by day and administrators by afternoon.
“This year, I´m teaching American Perspectives 1 and 2, and I'm also working as an Operations Assistant in the Athletic Department,” says Mr. McGavin, currently in his third year at AHHS working as a Social Studies teacher and an assistant Athletic Director.
“It is definitely a high responsibility,” says Mr. McGavin, who arrives early in the morning, spends his day teaching, and when all the other teachers go home, he starts his second job in the athletic department.
In the athletic department, Mr. McGavin helps to manage scheduling for both home and away games, along with keeping in touch with coaches to manage practice schedules and locations. .
The current biggest news in the Abington Heights Athletic Department is the construction of the new turf field at the high school.
“[The New Field] has caused many unseen repercussions,” Mr. McGavin explains. “Having the new field under construction leaves us with one less field on the side.”
Mr. McGavin explained how for the fall season, the school Athletic Department was strained trying to organize practice and game schedules with only one turf field, a small grass field down below and a football practice field.
The department resorted to holding practices for some soccer teams at the turf at Hillside Park, which is a bit out of the way, but still accessible.
“I have absolutely no role in the new field project,” says Mr. McGavin, who has instead been tasked with helping schedule practices and account for the missing field.
It is safe to say that Mr. McGavin has made a massive impact on our school community inside and outside of the classroom.
“Not only did I love having him as an APUSH teacher, still getting to see him
through the Athletic Department is awesome. He's definitely great to have around,¨ says senior student-athlete Jack Farrell.
Overall, in his few years here so far, Mr. McGavin has helped make a great impact on the school community in many aspects, and we look forward to his future at the school.
