This past month, Abington Heights Interact Club received its brand new Trex Bench for donating over 1,000 pounds of plastic last school year.
The bench not only highlights the club's remarkable successes, but also serves as a staple piece in one of our school’s courtyard.
Interact Club officers, President Sadie O’Brien, Vice President Carly Regan, and Secretary Gabriella Bourcier all discussed the importance of the bench by evaluating the efforts made and the positive impact recycling has on our community.
“The Trex Bench project was an initiative led by Serena Mohktari, our former Vice President of Interact,” Bourcier explained. “She was our spearheaded leader who helped us get the bench by donating over 1,000 pounds of plastic.”
Mohktari and the officers worked diligently throughout the year to collect as much plastic as they could. The club participated in the PLARN challenge where they knitted mats for the homeless using plastic bags. They had a lot of scraps left over from this project, so they took them over and added them toward their 1,000 pound goal.
“We got help from Jennings Calvey and the Civic League to donate plastic, and in order to donate the plastic we had to bag it, weigh it, and drop it off at Weis,” Bourcier mentioned. “We added up the total pounds and that’s how we kept track of how much plastic we got in order to reach 1,000.”
In addition to this wonderful accomplishment the club plans to donate their efforts to many other places in the community and expand upon their goal which is “Service Above Self.”
“We have a project that will be coming up on November ninth where we will be raking leaves for veterans in are community and the VFW of Clarks Summit,” Regan stated. “We are hoping to expand from there and keep the club growing.”
