Constantly varied functional movement performed at a high intensity. This is how PE teacher Ms. Caviston describes CrossFit, a unique approach to fitness that prioritizes varied high-intensity high-speed movement.
With CrossFit being the newest PE program offered at Abington Heights, students have been taking advantage of the CrossFit gym by pumping barbells, popping squats, and planking to their heart's’ content.
Ms. Caviston has a rich history in physical education. She has been a health and PE teacher for 15 years. She worked at Lakeland High School for 14 years, and is now enjoying her second year teaching students about health and fitness, as well as coaching, at Abington Heights.
CrossFit as a concept may seem daunting, especially to those with little to no prior experience in athletics, but Ms. Caviston stresses the accessibility CrossFit offers.
"This course can be geared to any fitness level… you don’t have to have any experience
in exercising to sign up for this class.”
Students all perform the same workouts, but with slight variations depending on each individual's’ skill level.
“Everybody in the room will be doing the same workout, but you’ll be doing it at your own level,” Ms. Caviston explains.
Tamara Seid commented on how CrossFit is available to people of all ages.
She said, “At the CrossFit gym I go to, there’s 70 year olds who workout with me sometimes. It’s amazing to watch them and workout with them. They’re still going and working out and moving, and I think it’s a great way to stay in shape and stay moving throughout your life.”
When students were asked what the benefits of CrossFit were, they had this to say.
Geoff Stanton responded, “For me, CrossFit is the perfect mix of working on endurance and strength at the same time.”
Ethan Grives replied with his thoughts, “I think it’s a lot bigger of a benefit than your typical high school workout.”
CrossFit is an interesting fitness course taught by a passionate instructor, and anyone involved will tell you the same thing; it’s a great time, it’s challenging, and it’s incredibly rewarding.
