This school year, Abington Heights High School administration cracked down on cell phone usage.
In past years, cell phones have been a major issue for the Abington Heights community as students are overusing them and getting distracted in the classroom. Administrators offered cell phone holders for every classroom and told teachers that they could have the students put their phones up at the beginning of each class period.
“Whether it’s scrolling through social media or playing a game [on your phone],” said assistant principal Mr. Becchetti. “You lose that human to human, teacher to student, student to student interaction.”
Most students seem to not like the stricter enforcement of the cell phone policy.
“I don’t really think it works that well,” said senior Yanni Galanakis. “The students who get distracted by cell phones are going to find other ways to get distracted.”
Many teachers seem to have a different opinion than the students.
“Cell phones have become quite a bit of a distraction,” said science teacher Ms. Green. “I was hoping for even more, stricter rules on cell phones.”
World language teacher Ms. Schwartz agreed when she said, “It gives [students] a break from [their] phones… It offers [students] an excuse and space to not answer phones.”
Cell phone surveys have been sent out recently and the feedback will be used to further improve the cell phone policy.
