On Nov. 8, 2024, the Recording Academy released the Grammy nominees for 2024. The Grammys are one of the year's most popular well-recorded musical events, recognizing some of the most talented artists and producers that went above and beyond.
Categories such as Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year strike controversy within communities as people debate on who the recipients will be.
2024 is also an exceptional year for the Grammys as all across social media many artists have bloomed this year with extremely talented and recognizable albums such as, “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” by Billie Eilish, “Short n’ Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter, “Cowboy Carter” by Beyonce, “The Tortured Poets Department” by Taylor Swift, “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000, “BRAT” by Charli XCX, “The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess” by Chappell Roan and “Djesse Vol. 4” by Jacob Collier.
Album of the Year is overall one of the most debated topics as we have seen many people question the Academy's choice of nominees. Many people online state they believe that Ariana Grande’s newest album “Eternal Sunshine” should not have been cut due to how the album's emotions struck so many individuals.
We also see a controversy of people stating they do not believe that Taylor Swift should have made the cut for this category. But the question is, what do you think?
Some of the most prominent categories that I believe should be recognized and highlighted are Best Pop/Duo Performance, Best R&B Song, Best Rap Song, Record of the Year, and, of course, Song of the Year.
Starting with the Best Pop/ Duo Performance, one of the best nominations for this category is “Die with a Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. This song truly was able to gain traction from the moment it was released as the nostalgic melody and beat to this song allowed it to be favored by many. Many said it reminded them of a wedding song or the ending to a romance movie which was agreed upon and gives fans hope that this song will win.
Moving on to the Best R&B Song, we can see that there are many talented artists with some very well-composed songs but one of the best listed and as well-favored by many is “Saturn” by SZA. The artist of this song has gained a lot of traction already as she received four Grammys for her 2023 album “SOS”. “Saturn” is a song similar to her others but stands out in this category as it is a very melodic R&B song that many enjoyed.
In the Best Rap Song category, the controversy is about whom fans believe should have been nominated, rather in comparison to who was. Kendrick Lamar received a nomination for his diss track “Not Like Us.” However, many believe that rap artist 21 Savage should have received credit in this category. His album “American Dream” was one of the best albums to come out this year and not receiving a nomination disappointed many.
Moving to Record of the Year, we can see nominees Sabrina Carpenter as well as Billie Eilish being nominated for this category which creates a stir as to who will win it, as both the artists were very influential this year.
Finally, for Song of the Year, the nominees are Shaboozey, Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars & Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift & Post Malone, Chappell Roan, Kendrick Lamar, Sabrina Carpenter, and Beyonce.
The question is who do you think should take home the Grammy? Tune in to the show on Sunday, Feb. 2 to find out who takes each award home.
