Loaner Chromebook Frequently Asked Questions
Loaner Chromebooks are Chromebooks that are available for students to borrow if their school Chromebook was left at home, is in repair, or has gone missing.
This page lists some of our most frequently asked questions about borrowing, using, and returning loaner Chromebooks. If you have a question that is not answered here, please use the Contact Us form to send the question over. We will respond to it as quickly as we can!
Loaner Chromebooks are available for students to borrow for the day to ensure that they can still be prepared to learn, even if they forget their school Chromebook.
Students are allowed to borrow loaner Chromebooks in cases where either they forgot their school Chromebook at home or their school Chromebook is in repair with the Multimedia/Tech Clerk. Most of our classes require a Chromebook to complete assignments and take tests, so if you do not have your school Chromebook, you will be sent to borrow a loaner Chromebook for the day.
Loaner devices must be assigned to the student borrowing it for tracking purposes. This is so if a loaner goes missing, we know who last had it. Using your student ID card or you virtual student ID on StudentVue helps us find your profile on our system quickly.
Loaner chargers are only provided during testing days in the library or in the gym. We do not give out loaner chargers on a daily basis because students often do not return them, and we cannot track loaner chargers in the same way we can with loaner Chromebooks.
That depends.
If the damage was already present when you checked out the loaner device, then you will not be charged for it. Most of our loaner devices are old and may be missing an arrow key or have a cracked bezel (the plastic around the screen). These damages have already been recorded on our systems, so we are aware of them.
If the damage occurred while the loaner device was in your possession -- usually water damage or a cracked screen -- then you will be charged for the repair or replacement of the device.
Unless your school Chromebook is in repair or is missing, all loaners must be returned to the library at the end of the day. Any loaners that are not returned at the end of the day are disabled. In cases such as weekends or school holiday breaks, unreturned loaners are considered lost devices and will have a $300 replacement device fee charged to the student's account.
The Multimedia/Tech Clerk sends out emails during the school day to all students who have a loaner device to return the devices at the end of the day. You should be checking your email regularly or at least have your Gmail notifications turned on.
There are a few options available to you if you cannot come to the library to return your loaner but wish to avoid the $300 replacement device fee..
If you cannot make it to the library at the end of the school day, simply email me to let me know that you are unable to come to the library and will return your loaner the next morning. If the loaner is not returned by the end of the following day, a replacement device fee will be applied.
If you have withdrawn from the school, you can drop off the loaner device at the front office. Make sure to tell the staff at the front desk that the device needs to go to the library when you drop it off.
If it is a school holiday break (such as fall, winter, or spring break), you may have to wait until school resumes to return the loaner. You will need to take care to make sure the loaner does not become lost or damaged during the break. The front office is sometimes open with limited hours during certain school breaks. In those cases, simply follow the instructions above for dropping off the loaner device at the front office.
If you still have the loaner device, all you need to do is return it to the library. So long as the device is functional upon return, the replacement device fee will be removed. If the device is damaged but repairable, the replacement device fee will be removed and you will only be charged the price of the repairs. If the device is damaged beyond repair, the replacement device fee will stay on the account.
Did you reply to the email explaining why you couldn't make it to the library at the end of the day? If you did not explain why or you just sent an empty reply email, then you did not tell me what I need to know to prevent the replacement device fee from being charged to your account.
Did you reply to the email before the end of the school day? Explanations must be given before 3:30pm in order to avoid the replacement device fee. If you replied to the email after 3:30pm, I will have already gone through the loaners that were still checked out and applied fees.
In both cases, the fee will be removed once the loaner is returned to the library in the same functioning condition it was loaned out in.
