Do you know the expectations tied to your school Chromebook?
Upon enrolling at any of our schools within the Agua Fria High School District, you should have received a Chromebook and charger from your school's IT Technician or Multimedia/Tech Clerk. This Chromebook is referred to as your school Chromebook or school device. You should have also received a paper that contains your login information and a few of the expectations for using and handling your device. Chances are, you've lost track of this paper or will lose track of it in the future.
No worries, though! This article is here to rehash what was on that page as well as summarize some of the expectations outlined in the Digital Citizenship section of your Student Handbook. You can find the 2025-2026 Agua Fria High School District Student and Family Rights and Responsibilities Handbook here.
Your school device was loaned to you, not gifted. The district maintains ownership of your school device during your time at any of our district high schools. This means that you have been entrusted with school property and are liable for any damages, mistreatment, or misplacement of your device.
You are expected to use your school device for all four years of your schooling within our district. As such, it is recommended that you do your best to ensure your school device remains in good working condition. This means ensuring that it is properly maintained and protected from hazards such as pets, liquid spills, and other forms of physical or software damage. If any damage occurs to your school device, you are expected to report the damages to your school's IT Technician or Multimedia/Tech Clerk.
In the interest of student safety, the Agua Fria High School District exercises the right to filter, access, and review students' online activity if deemed necessary by the district. Attempting to bypass these filters is a direct violation of the Digital Citizenship section of your student handbook.
Your school device will be used in class to complete schoolwork. As such, you are required to bring the device to school every day you attend. It is also recommended that you bring your device's charger to school. Chromebook batteries can last up to 8-12 hours depending on usage, but it is better to be prepared.
If you forget your device at home or it loses its charge in the middle of the day, you will be expected to come to the library to rent out a loaner Chromebook for the day. The library does not provide loaner chargers, only loaner Chromebooks.
Remember that you are responsible for keeping your device in working condition. This means doing what you can to prevent physical damage such as damages from drops, pets, liquids, other outside forces and prevent software damage such as damage from accessing certain sites or downloading unsafe files.
You are free to purchase protective accessories such as removable hard-shell cases or cushioning laptop sleeves, but these are not required by the district.
Each device is pre-assigned to a student and will have a label with their first and last name on either the front or back. Devices will also have a label with an asset number on the back. These labels are necessary for the Tech Team to identify the device and its user, so it is important that these labels are not modified, covered up, or removed. In addition to this, we ask students to not place additional stickers on the devices.
If you have purchased a removable Chromebook case to protect your device, you may place stickers on that case. Again, cases and other Chromebook accessories are not required by the district. The decision to purchase protective films and cases or other accessories is up to the student's or guardian's discretion.
If you wish to carry your device while it is open, do so by holding it with both hands under the device. Chromebook screens are notoriously fragile, and carrying the device by the screen can result in screen damage (cracks, streaks, or glitching). It can also increase the chance that you'll drop it on the way to your next class.
The best way to carry your device is either in your backpack (preferably inside a laptop sleeve or separated pocket) or closed and in your arms.
Your school device is meant to use for school-related activities, like completing and turning in your assignments or working on class and club projects. The device is not meant for personal use such as browsing social media or installing games or other software not approved or pre-installed by the District.
Similarly, you are not permitted to use personal devices such as smart phones or personal laptops to complete schoolwork. Students may use their smart phones to complete schoolwork at their teacher's instruction only.
Again, attempts to modify the device's physical appearance or bypass the security and filtering systems is a violation of the Electronic Information Service guidelines outlined in the Digital Citizenship section of the student handbook and may result in disciplinary action.
If you are leaving to attend another school outside of the Agua Fria High School District, you will be asked to return your device and charger upon withdrawal. The device must be returned in working condition with its district-issued charger to the Tech Team. Failure to return the device or returning the device in a non-functional condition will result in a $300 replacement fee being charged to the student's account. Failure to return the charger will result in a $15 replacement fee being charged to the student's account. Both fees will be applied if neither the device nor its charger are returned to the school.
If applied, these fees will be removed when the device and/or charger are returned to the school in working condition.
