Since 1998, he became the leading researcher of genetic epidemiology at Greifswald University and contributed actively to numerous research on gene-environment interaction in depression and genome-wide association studies. He is an active member in international consortia like Neuro-CHARGE, Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and ENIGMA for genomic research and brain imaging. He established a research group for multi-OMICS analyses in psychiatric and brain diseases. He is the research group leader of Biomarkers of dementia in the general population, a study run by German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases(DZNE). Since 2012 he is the Coordinator of Greifswald Approach to Individualized Medicine (GANI_MED) and Co-Chair of Research Net Community Medicine. He is coordinating the German activities in the JPND project “Brain Imaging, cognition, Dementia and next generation GEnomics: a Transdisciplinary approach to search for risk and protective factors of neurodegenerative disease” (BRIDGET). His group search for common and rare genetic variants of Alzheimer Disease to establish new brain imaging markers and patterns for early risk assessment of dementia and of brain ageing in the general population. Professor Grabe has more than 270 publications in reputed high impact factor scientific journals and is also the advisor of the FinnBrain study at Turku University, Finland.
