Key Stage 3
Students in year 7 and 8 explore art through the formal elements of art: Line, Tone, Texture, Colour, Shape, Form, Pattern. In year 7 students explore the elements through drawing and painting. In year 8 students explore the same elements in more depth through a range of art techniques and processes. This is all done on a 10 week rotation alongside the other Creative Arts subjects.
· Children have a natural desire to be creative and interpret and represent what they have seen, imagined, remembered and felt.
· Art allows a child to express themselves through creative processes that awakens the imagination and builds self-esteem.
· Art stimulates both sides of the brain and develops hand to eye coordination.
· Skills taught in art can enhance other curriculum areas.
· Art provides creative thought processes for problem solving and exploration while technical skills develop control and encourage respect for materials and equipment.
· Visual appreciation heightens a child’s perception of the world around them and the value of aesthetics.
Fundamentally, art is important in children’s development because it enriches their lives and provides the platform for the essential development and wellbeing of children.
Art is a joy and should be celebrated and shared with others.

What will you study as part of this course?
The qualification is built around a common core of two areas,
Component 1: Portfolio worth 60%
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment worth 40%
How is the course assessed?
Internally set and marked.
Externally set theme and internally marked. Assessed through controlled assessment.
Each component is assessed separately out of 80 marks. You will be assessed using 4 assessment objectives of develop, review/experiment, record and present.
What qualifications could you achieve?
A GCSE qualification graded between 0 -9.
What further career options and pathways are available to you after this course?
On completion of a GCSE Art and Design course, you could progress to further education.
