How words combine to make sentences

Writing link

I can link some words and sentences using conjunctions: but, or, and, so, when, if, because

Part One - Coordinating Conjunctions

SPaG objective 1: I can use and choose the correct coordinating conjunctions: but, or, and, so

Activity: The FANBOYS

Aim: Show the class the FANBOYS superheroes. Explain that in this lesson we will be focusing on four of them: but, or, and, so. Review what each one does to coordinate words, phrases and clauses. Then model how to use them to fill gaps in words, phrases, sentences and clauses. Once clear, the same game can be played on paper or as a group/partnered activity.

Resources required: FANBOYS images

SPaG objective 2: I can use and choose the correct coordinating conjunctions: but, or, and, so

Activity: BOAS

Aim: Show pupils a variety of sentences linked to the text/topic. Explain that some words are missing. Then introduce them to the BOAS. Snakes, and all Boaconstrictors, but with their own names: But, Or, And, So. The pupils cut and glue, draw lines, or just match the correct snake to the correct coordinating conjunctions to complete the compound sentences.

Resources required: BOAS graphics

Part Two - Subordinating Conjunctions

SPaG objective 1: I can use some subordinating conjunctions to add details and explanations: when, if, because

Activity: Make A Point: because, if, when

Aim: Explain to the pupils that conjunctions help us add information to our sentences to support our views. Then show the class a variety of points: I think chocolate is good for you…. Exercise is important… then (as a demo) model how to complete the sentence using ‘because’, following with two more sentences that begin with ‘If’ and ‘When’. Example: I think chocolate is good for you because it makes people happy. If people are happy, they smile more and are kind. When people are kind, the world is a better place and full of love and care. Then it’s over to the children. They use the statement and sentence starters and ‘get stuck in’.

Part Three - Linking words, phrases and clauses using conjunctions

FINAL objective: I can link some words and sentences using conjunctions: but, or, and, so, when, if, because

Activity: Conjunction Junction

Aim: Show the pupils a finished letter. Zoom in closer to show that there are words missing. What words? Conjunctions: some to connect words, phrases (groups of words) and sentences. Some coordinate, some add details or explanations (subordinating). Now show the pupils the Conjunction Junction traffic cone with all of the words written on it. What word will you choose to fill the gaps?
