Year 5 - Latest News!
Their Bridge Building Challenge was to build a bridge that would hold a 1Kg weight! After making their bridges in spaghetti and then paper, Year 5 made their final bridges in wood!
Final Forest Schools!
In their final Forest Schools session, Year 5 pupils (and staff!) had great fun! They had a choice of activities: swing, zip wire, hammock, bug hunting, den building, climbing trees, whittling, making necklaces, wands, pencils!
Year 5 have been building more bridges, this time as part of their Rivers & Bridges topic! 'Buying' their supplies at Bob's Building Supplies Ltd. each group in Miss Jones' Class had £100 to spend (wisely!)! This was the first stage of their Bridge Building Challenge!
Forest Schools - Session 3!
In their third Forest Schools Session, Year 5 built bridges! In groups, teams had 1 piece of string and 5 gold coins. They could buy more pieces of string with the coins. The aim: to build a bridge to the shoulders of the smallest person and as long as the tallest person. it had to be the width to allow two squirrels across and withstand the weight of a brick! A great time was had by all!
Neil Harris - Millwall FC!
The manager of Millwall United Football Club visited pupils in Years 3&5! Neil shared details of his his career in sport and then answered questions from the pupils! A really fascinating insight into a professional sportsman's career! All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the sessions!
Forest Schools - Session 2!
In their second Forest Schools session, Year 5 created treasure maps - identifying landmarks, did some whittling/carving and had fun climbing trees and getting into and out of the hammock! They also did some more work on their dens!
Forest Schools - Session 1!
Year 5 began their Forest Schools Sessions by refreshing their memories of the rules of Forest School and levels of trust. They then constructed waterproof dens which were tested by having water poured over them!
Southend United Football Club! - Session 5
In their 5th session with Southend Football Club, alongside the physical activities, Year 5 pupils investigated protein and hydration!
The Dragon Carrier Experiment.
Pupils in Year 5 had to design and make a carrier to collect the dragon's egg with only the materials they were given. The carriers were then dropped outside. From Miss Jones' class, only 2 survived out of 10! These designs will now be passed on to Dr. Ernest Drake, Head of the Dragonologists Society!
Southend United Football Club! - Session 3
In their third session, Year 5 pupils learnt about how to try to keep healthy thinking about protein and fruit in their diet!
Southend United Football Club! - Session 2
Year 5 continued benefiting from Plumberow's links with Southend Football Club. In their second session, members of the club continued working with Year 5 pupils, talking about keeping healthy, exercise and diet etc. The visits consist of practical elements as well as some written activities. The second of these visits again concentrated on the importance and the benefits of exercise and on the theory side, all about bones!
Plumberow were visited by 'The Resilient Reader'!! Following a Parents' Meeting, KS2 pupils attended a fun filled assembly (photos of which can be viewed here)! There were also lots of reading based activities happening in classrooms, lots of book sharing and some absolutely FANTASTIC costumes! Everyone had a great day (including the staff!!) Thank you for your continued support in helping to make Powerful Learners of the pupils at Plumberow!
E-Safety Workshops - March 2018
Following a meeting for parents run by Debbie Schofield from ICT Inspires, Debbie went on to run workshops for our Year 5 & 6 pupils! Lots of sensible, valuable advice to stay safe when using the internet and social media!
Southend United Football Club! - Session 1
Year 5 are currently benefiting from Plumberow's links with Southend Football Club. Members of the club are working with Year 5 pupils for 6 weeks talking about keeping healthy, exercise and diet etc. the visits will consist of practical elements as well as some written activities. The first of these visits concentrated on the importance and the benefits of exercise!
Mrs Carr's Class (in Year 5) shared their terms' work with their 'buddies' in Year 2 (Mrs Atherton's Class)! They also shared their favourite books!
Space & Planetarium!
As part of their Space topic, each Year 5 class had an hour in a Planetarium when it came to Plumberow. An excellent morning full of space facts, looking at the planets, the solar system and the constellations! There were other Space/Rocket themed activities too!
The Christmas Treat for Year 5 this year was a DVD and Pizza!!
DT Challenge Day!
Along with pupils from the other local primaries, six children from Year 5 and six children from Year 6 took part in a Design Technology Challenge Day hosted by Greensward Academy. The day had a Star Wars theme and the children were introduced to new graphic art designing programs on the computer alongside 3d model making, toy packaging designing and watching demonstrations of vacuum forming, creating space craters. At the end of the day, the children put together a space scene including some of their creations from the day. It was a challenging and extremely fun day and all involved produced some excellent work!
Year 5 pupils experienced a day in Tudor life when they participated in their Tudor Day as part of their topic work!
Archery, the stocks, writing, a maypole and lots more, brought all their research and work in the classroom, to life!
