We aim to develop in children an understanding of how people have lived in different times in history, and to develop a respect for cultural traditions and History of this country.
We aim to help pupils to make sense of their surroundings and to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the variety of physical and human conditions on the Earth's surface. In Lower School the pupils will concentrate on the investigation of their immediate surroundings (home and school). In Middle School the emphasis is on the local environment (Hockley). Pupils in Upper School study a wider area including the Isle of Wight and a contrasting country.

We aim to develop confidence and competence in physical skills appropriate to age and ability, so that pupils may appreciate exercise and recreation as an enjoyable and important option in life. Through encouraging team games we aim to help children learn the importance of working together. Games are taught by fully qualified P.E. instructors.
The PE programme includes gymnastics, games, swimming and dance. Children take part in local school leagues in Soccer and Netball and participate in inter-school activities, including swimming, athletics, cross country and rugby. More information regarding these can be found here!
We aim to encourage children to listen to and enjoy music of different styles, and to be able to appreciate the main elements of music including rhythm, pitch and composition. Children take part in Infant and Junior Area Music Festivals each year. Instrumental tuition from members of the County Music Team is available in the academy. However, this is an optional activity and is paid for on a termly basis by parents of participating children. The academy has several choirs who perform at various concerts and other events throughout the year.
The academy has adopted the Essex agreed syllabus 'Open Worlds'. We aim to allow pupils to develop a knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other major religions. We ensure that all children take part in a daily act of worship. In addition, all children are given the opportunity to consider and discuss such issues as caring and sharing, living and working together, kindness and tolerance.
Parents who wish their children to be withdrawn from the act of worship should inform the academy by letter, so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
Design and Technology
We aim to develop the pupil's ability to think and act imaginatively, effectively and productively and to develop the skills which enable problems to be identified and practical solutions applied.
Personal, Social and Health education is part of a continuous programme that encompasses health, behaviour and lifestyle beginning with the youngest children. As children mature they should acquire an understanding of the physical, social and emotional characteristics of growth. We support this understanding by providing appropriate knowledge through modules of work, films and discussion. Specific health/hygiene, sex education and substance abuse are covered in Years 5&6 where parents are fully informed of the content beforehand.
The academy has an agreed Sex Education Policy formulated by the Governing Body, who believes that this needs to be a joint responsibility between parents and the academy.
Modern Foreign Languages
From January 2015, the modern foreign language at Plumberow changed from French to Spanish. Pupils in Years 2 through to 6 all receive a weekly Spanish lesson from a specialist Spanish Teacher.
