Communication

Within the F.E unit we endeavour to follow the ethos of total communication. Literacy is addressed across all subjects. All forms of communication are encouraged whether it is through speaking, listening, reading, writing, signing, symbols, photos or objects of reference. Students are encouraged to develop at their optimum level through their preferred method of communication.

During our registration sessions students complete their daily timetable with the focus on using their reading and writing skills. This prepares them for what will be happening throughout their day. All students benefit from daily reading practise whether it is using their own communication aid; reading books from the library; big books on the computer; ordering from menus; looking at recipes or making shopping lists.

In our discussion sessions, students have the opportunity to develop their speaking, listening, signing and turn taking skills; supporting them to become effective communicators; to give them a voice in society and to increase their independence.
