Application of Number
In the FE unit, numeracy is addressed across all areas of the timetable including the Sensory Curriculum. We teach numeracy in a functional way that students will be able to transfer to real life situations. We address money handling, coin recognition, weight, measure, time and making sense of problems.
During class-based activities, students have experienced money in a variety of ways. They have had the opportunity to spend their own money when accessing the community, deciding what they wish to purchase. Within our shopping and cooking sessions, we integrate weight and measure by weighing amounts of ingredients needed, whilst taking into account the amount of dinners that need to be prepared.
Time is identified through the use of the student’s daily timetables and to inform them what will be happening next during their day. Students attention is also drawn to key times throughout the day as well as using teaching aids in class based activities.
