Attendance and Absences
School Attendance Requirements for All Pupils
Regular attendance in all classes is important it is your legal responsibility to make sure that regular and punctual attendance is maintained in accordance with The Education Act 1996 sec. 444 (1).
Any child/ren with excessive absence will be referred by the school to the Education Welfare Service, who will carry out investigations on poor school attendance and punctuality and offer support.
What is a Fixed Penalty Notice?
Under existing legislation, parents/carers commit an offence if a child fails to attend regularly and the absences a classed as unauthorised (those for which the school cannot or has not given permission). Depending on circumstances such cases may result in prosecution under Section 444 of the Education Act 1996.
A Penalty Notice is an alternative to prosecution, which does not require an appearance in Court whilst still securing an improvement in a pupil’s attendance. Payment of a Penalty Notice enables parents to discharge potential liability for conviction.
The cost for Fixed Penalty Notice is £60 if paid within 21 days and £120 if paid after this but within 28 days. Please note that each parent will separately be issued a Penalty Notice for each child.
Should you or your child/ren be experiencing any difficulty regarding school attendance and wish to discuss the matter, please contact Angela Ritchie, the Family Outreach Officer.
