English & Literacy
At Newlands Academy our over-riding aim is to ensure that each student, whatever their ability, should unlock their full potential. Developing students’ English and Literacy skills is, of course, fundamental to unlocking their potential across the academic curriculum and beyond. We hope to broaden students’ experiences of the types of texts they encounter and foster a life long appreciation for reading.

At KS3 students cover the three strands that make up the English curriculum: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. We cover a wide range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction and films, in order to teach our students the skills they need to succeed at GCSE.
Our KS4 students work towards the Cambridge iGCSE Language qualification. They complete three pieces of coursework in school as well as a Speaking and Listening assessment. They sit one exam in the Summer in order to complete the qualification.
