Home Economics (Food and Nutrition)
In Home Economics students learn how to develop existing as well as new recipe ideas and produce portfolios of work. Students will develop food production skills, learn how new products are developed in the food industry, they will also learn about many different ingredients and how these ingredients function in recipes to give the required outcome.
How will your work and progress be assessed?
Students will receive feedback on his progress and have regular discussions with his teacher regarding ways to improve work. This will include assessment of written work (e.g. tasks, exam questions) and assessment of practical work.
Controlled assessments will be internally marked and externally moderated.
Students interested in Home Economics should be able to:
- Respect and listen to other people's views
- Work hard to complete controlled assessment and meet deadlines
- Have an ability to write effectively
- Have good attendance and turn up to lessons on time
- Be inquisitive, explore what food can do and enjoy cooking a variety of dishes from different countries around the world
Where might Home Economics lead you?
Home Economics (Food and Nutrition) GCSE provides a good foundation for Food A-Level, other Design and Technology A’ Level subjects, Health and Social Care or Child Development study. Students can also go on to study Food Science or do an apprenticeship in the Food Industry.
Longer term Home Economics can help you work towards gaining a career within the food industry. A few examples of this could include: Chef, Caterer, Hotel manager, Restaurant owner, Food scientist and Taste tester.
Most importantly learning how to cook is a Life Skill!
