Maltings Academy has, at the heart of its life and work, two specialisms, both of which aim to enhance learning and provide students with new innovative opportunities.
Maltings Academy provides an extensive curriculum and access to first class facilities, coaching and training, which will enable all students to participate in their chosen sports at a level best suited to their interests and abilities. The academy is well known for its success in developing the sporting ambitions of its students, and we will build on this success, encouraging and supporting our young people to try new activities, develop their talents and enjoy both the social benefits and competitive successes that participation in sport can offer.
Our sports specialism aims to help the academy’s community embrace the overwhelming positive physical, mental and social effects of high quality sport. With the 2016 Olympic Games having been such a success, it is more pertinent than ever for young people to be aware of, and participate in sporting opportunities. All students will have a minimum of two hours of physical education per week, which will incorporate health and fitness as a key aspect of the curriculum. This is reinforced with an encompassing extra curricular programme, of both recreational and competitive sport.
One of the most significant impacts of this specialism in the last few years has been the introduction of our "Olympic Week" where all students have five days off timetable to complete activities based around the olympic values. The students complete tasks based around the history of the olympics, past and present competitors and take part in practical sports competitions. Achievement is celebrated alongside the principle of "its the taking part that matters"! These weeks have proven to be very popular with both the students and the staff, and it is now a highlight of the summer term.

Our Science specialism allows us to provide excellent facilities across the full range of science subjects, enabling all students to discover and enjoy the rewards of scientific discovery, and to cultivate understanding at a greater depth. We will provide a centre of excellence, encourage young people to pursue science beyond the age of 16, and provide them with appropriate learning pathways so that they develop the skills needed to be active and successful citizens and to progress into employment, further training and higher education according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.
We aim to create a challenging environment which will raise standards of achievement and the quality of teaching and learning in science for all students, leading to whole academy improvements in performance. Our staff actively promote all students to discover and enjoy the rewards of scientific discovery through inventive strategies, helping to cultivate an understanding at a greater depth.

Students and staff are regularly involved in projects which impact communities outside of the academy site. All students will have the opportunity to contribute and participate in these exciting ventures during their time at Maltings Academy.
