At Lea Forest we foster positive attitudes, fascination and excitement of discovery through understanding the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts. Through the use of our 5 part mastery flow model we broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of how mathematics is used in real life, enabling our pupils to use and understand mathematical language and recognise its importance as a language for communication and thinking. We aim for our children to develop a ‘can do’ attitude, where they recognise themselves as Mathematicians. Mathematics helps us to understand and change the World, and we want our children from Lea Forest Primary Academy to have the skills and understanding to take an important role within this.

The 5 Part Model

At Lea Forest Primary Academy we aim to develop in all children:

High Aspirations - have a passion and enthusiasm for all things mathematical that goes beyond the mathematics lesson.

Independence - become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they are efficient in using and selecting the appropriate written algorithms and mental methods, underpinned by mathematical concepts.

Resilience – to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real life scenarios.

Innovative – reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

Respectful – to respect their own and others right to develop high level mathematical skills through positive attitude.
