Vision, Curriculum, Homework & Examinations
Our vision is to continually improve standards through an engaging and challenging curriculum. We will endeavour to ensure that all language learners develop the skills and confidence to help enhance their chances of employability in the wider world. We will equip our young people with the skills to achieve their full potential in a climate of mutual respect and personal responsibility.
Year 7 begin their journey at Kingswood Academy with an outstanding phonics programme to embed skills for speaking. Students at KS3 follow a curriculum design which mirrors the KS4 curriculum, ensuring a range of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are embedded. Grammar techniques are a heavy focus at KS3 to enable students to embark on the GCSE course with confidence. At the end of each term each year group will study a cultural aspect to ensure they have a clear understanding of how Francophone countries celebrate different festivals.
Year 9, 10 and 11 are working towards a full AQA French GCSE. They cover the topics below over a 3-year period which provides deep learning in preparation for their exams at the end of year 11. Topics are covered on a termly basis with time built in for thorough revision and preparation for exams in year 11. Throughout the year, all year groups with learn about the cultural aspect of a festival in France which is now part of the new GCSE curriculum. This enables students to have a thorough understanding of French culture, in addition to the language aspect of the course.
How do we assess students in MFL?
There is a rigorous assessment schedule within the French department. Students at KS3 are assessed in every topic using a variety of skills with grammar being a key focus. Students are formally assessed four times throughout the year. KS3 are also given regular verbal feedback each lesson and written feedback once every 3 weeks. Following feedback, students are given the opportunity to act upon this and improve their own work.
Students at KS4 are assessed in every topic using a variety of skills with grammar being a key focus. Students are formally assessed four times throughout the year. KS4 are also given regular verbal feedback each lesson and written feedback once every 3 weeks. Following feedback, students are given the opportunity to act upon this and improve their own work.
Both KS3 and KS4 are set homework regularly on Show My Homework. For KS3 there is a vocabulary learning task which enables students to practice vocabulary learned in lessons.
For KS4 vocabulary learning is also set as part of homework in addition to practice exam questions. The exam questions cover a range of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Whilst we test KS4 on specific vocabulary on Show My Homework, we expect them to constantly build their vocabulary at home through Quizlet, using their personalised log-in.
