The Phoenix Team consists of all Higher Ability students at Kingswood Academy. These students performed particularly well at Key Stage 2 and hence have high minimum target grades for the end of Year 11. We expect Phoenix Team students to achieve top grades at the end of Year 11 and go on to excellent colleges, universities and careers.
To support students with this, we run extracurricular events throughout the academic year that inspire and motivate them. We recently took a group of Year 9s to The University of York for a campus tour and talks on the different courses available to them. The students received information about Student Finance and what university life can be like. Many students are then following this up with a 6-week Higher Education mentoring programme run by NCOP. This will give them an opportunity to learn how to write a CV, improve their communication skills and build their knowledge of Higher Education.
We also aim to stretch and challenge these students on a daily basis both in and out of lessons. In lessons, students are exposed to challenging and thought provoking content that ignites debate and intrigue. In Maths at Key Stage 3, students are entered into the UKMT Maths Challenge each year with a great success rate. Last year, 30 of our Higher Ability students in Y7 sat the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge along with 260, 000 pupils from over 4100 schools across the UK. Our students achieved a gold, three silver and four bronze. We will be entering students again this year and hope to build on last year’s success.
