Science helps students develop an enquiring mind through a variety of approaches. This enables them to understand and question the very nature of life, the world and our universe. Science provides a link between all other subject areas and integrates them to explain the very ‘how and why’ questions that everybody asks at some point in their life, it is not so much a subject as a way of thinking.

We have a team of well-qualified science teachers and technicians who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the department. We offer the full range of key stages with students enjoying success at all levels
Key Stage 3 Science
At Key Stage 3 students are given a solid foundation in the national curriculum using the Oxford Activate course by Kerboodle over two years. The course is completed by the end of Year 8. The aim is to ensure that all students:
- Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding;
- Develop understanding of scientific processes and methods;
- Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses of science and the implications it will have for the present and the future.
Students are grouped according to ability in Year 7 after the first half-term. They have seven lessons over a two-week cycle. The course consists of a variety of biology, chemistry and physics modules:
Year 7 - Cells, structure and functions of the body systems, reproduction.
Year 8 modules - Health and life style, ecosystem and processes, and adaptation and inheritance.
Year 7 - Particles and their behaviour, elements, atom and compounds, reactions, acids and alkalis.
Year 8 - The periodic table, separation technique, metals and acids, the earth.
Year 7 - Forces, sound, light and space.
Year 8 - Electricity and magnetism, energy, motion, and pressure
In Year 9 some of the earlier topics will be revisited and reinforced in order to ensure that the students are ready for the GCSE course. Students are assessed after each topic as well as during each lesson using a variety of assessment methods to ensure each student makes progress.
A Key Stage 3 Science Club is held weekly where students have the opportunity to be involved in activities not covered by their normal science lessons.
Key Stage 4 Science
At Kingsley, we offer the new AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy. This is a course that is suitable to a wide range of students and will enable them to continue with science at A Level. It also provides those students not wishing to continue on to A Level with a solid understanding of the world around them, allowing them to keep up with today’s fast-paced medical and technological changes, and make informed decisions in all areas of their lives.
For our more able students, we offer the AQA separate GCSE sciences in biology, chemistry and physics. This pathway provides a detailed and comprehensive grounding in the three sciences as it covers a wider range of material than the combined sciences course. These three GCSEs have enjoyed success above the national average since their introduction.
Weekly drop-in sessions are available for those students who want a little extra help or want to delve further into a topic, extending their knowledge and understanding.
Key Stage 5 Science
The success of our KS4 science has led to a rapidly expanded 6th Form where OCR A Level Biology and Chemistry, and AQA A Level Physics are taught. These courses are taught by dedicated specialists with a wealth of experience. All of the courses are assessed externally in the summer term for both the AS and A2 courses. We pride ourselves on our provision for AS/A2 courses, offering holiday and after-school revision sessions, and making ourselves available for support and guidance.
Opportunities for people with a qualification in biology and chemistry are extensive and include; agriculture, accounting, biology, engineering, geology, medicine, veterinary science and physiotherapy. Physics qualifications are held in high regard and are viewed by universities and industry as an excellent grounding for any science or engineering course. The majority of our students go on to take science degrees at universities up and down the country, for example Queen Mary University of London and Durham.
