As you may be aware, Essex County Council proposes to close Hockley Library as a full library service. Under the proposals, residents in Hockley will need to run the library themselves if they want to keep the service.
The library is currently used by children and the elderly, as well as groups such as Rhyme Time, Nitter Natter and book groups. Local children also have their artwork displayed there and is a main source of computer access. I'm sure we can agree that the library is a much crerished and important part of our community.
Hockley Primary School is fully in support of keeping the library open for full use. Our children deserve to have the library as we did as youngsters.
Local mums, Megan Hemmings and Carla Vaughan have campaigned tirelessly to councillors to fight the proposed closure.
On Friday 18th January, they came into our school to explain to the children why the library is so important.
They had a special song all about the library which can be watched here.
The children were also told that although they may only be young, together their voices can be heard and that they can all make a difference.
A petiton was opened in November and there is staggering support of the cause already - over 4000 signatures.
Children are unable to sign the petition so instead, we are asking the children to use their very best persuasive writing skills to explain why it is important to them that the library remains open.
