'Fluency with the Unfamiliar'

In Maths we work closely with our Academy Trust who have developed a 4 part model which builds confidence and enable children to master a concept in 4 stages. We aim to broaden knowledge and ensure children have an in-depth understanding which enables them to communicate effectively and apply their skill to the real world.


The 4 Part Model

Representing (showing) – We use concrete materials/ apparatus to model and explore the concept.

Fluency (do) – At this stage we do lots of activities that help the children practice the concept until they fully understand it.

Probing Questions (thinking) – This is the stage where the children have to think about the answer and explain what they have done.

Rich and Complex Tasks (Solving) – At this stage children apply their knowledge to problems and use their understanding to work out the answers to complex problems.
