Learning Resource Centre
The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides a welcoming environment in which to study or read, and plays a central role in supporting learning at Firth Park Academy.
The LRC incorporates a full IT suite with 30 computers, 26 netbooks and a colour printer. All students are encouraged to take books out on loan, and this is reflected in our loan statistics of over 1000 items issued per month.
The LRC is managed by Mrs Edwards, a Chartered Librarian with many years’ library and educational experience. She leads our Key Stage 3 students in Accelerated Reader, a guided and levelled reading scheme which monitors students’ progress and encourages them to become enthusiastic and confident readers. All reading success is celebrated within the academy, with students often reading over 1 million words each.
Use of schemes such as Book Buzz, School Library Pack and participation in World Book Day contribute to the promotion of reading for enjoyment, which supports students’ learning across the whole curriculum.
The LRC is accessible to students and staff every day, and guidance is available for study and independent learning. Other activities include lunchtime clubs and two daily homework clubs.
Mrs Edwards encourages all parents and carers to support students with the strategies they need to become fluent readers. If you have any questions, please contact her in the LRC.
