Family Support Advocacy Team
Columbus School and College prides itself on working closely with and supporting all our families. We have one Family Support Advocate (FSA) who aims to provide advice and support for all aspects of day to day family life with a child or young person with a learning need or disability.
This service is supplemented further by our Health and Wellbeing Advocate who supports attendance at challenging medical appointments and advocates for families at multi-agency medical meetings.
Columbus also supports families to ensure they are accessing their child’s full entitlement to benefits and allowances via our Parent Entitlement Advisor. This service can also support families to access grants and charitable funds to provide adaptations to the home or specialist equipment that can sometimes be very difficult for families to afford.
Our Parent Support Directory signposts families to a range of community-based support groups and can be found under the ‘Parents’ section of this website.
Here are some testimonies from parents/carers who have worked closely with our team:
"Even when my child was poorly I received two telephone calls genuinely enquiring about his wellbeing. I can't say that he would have got the same kind of interest had he attended a mainstream establishment!”
"The link worker has been a really important person at the school, having that support for someone like me who backs off and hasn’t got that confidence has been a godsend - it is lovely having a person that is approachable - she has given me strength to fight and I know she is there to back me up. She has helped with the teachers and LSAs to help them understand me. It is a fantastic service and one that a school like ours definitely needs. Having the right Linkworker has been amazing!"
