Ready, Steady, Read!
All children are expected to read at least three times a week at home. This needs to be recorded and signed by an adult in your child's reading record book. When they reach specific milestones (25, 50, 100 etc) children are presented with a certificate in assembly.
Children in Foundation stage learn phonics (letter sounds) throughout the academic year. An action pack explaining how the scheme works will be sent home when the children start in Reception followed by individual flash cards, kept in each child's phonics wallet, which will be sent home when children have learnt them in class. When the children know the individual sounds, you will be able to encourage them to try to make small words. There will also be a book for you to comment on your child's progress at home. In Key Stage 1 & 2, children are grouped for phonics and spellings throughout the academy. Each Friday, they will be given new words to learn for the following Friday. Helping your child practise their spellings by reading them out, recognising similar words and asking them to write them a few times individually or in a full sentence will give them far more confidence when it comes to writing in class.

Each term, children will be given a project to complete at home which will be linked to the topic they are studying in class. How much they choose to do is up to them, but working with your child on a project is a really good way to find out more about what they can do and what they already know. In the past years, children have drawn up family trees, made model pyramids and even dressed up for a photo-shoot.
At the beginning of each new term an overview of the areas of learning, trips and visits and homework for the term will be sent to all parents and carers. Copies of these are also available in the Academy reception area and can be found on class webpages. If you would like to discuss homework arrangements at any point please contact your child's teacher.
