Community Education

Community at Broadlands Academy

Broadlands Academy is more than just a Secondary school and believes that education stretches beyond the classroom. In January 2018, we opened our own Nursery school on site. 'Broadlands Bears' is a fantastic and extremely popular nursery. It is almost full already and has a wonderful learning and play environment. This environment includes an amazing and extremely well resourced outside area, including a wooded trail. The nursery is open for 1 to 5 year olds and includes a Forest school on site as well.

Broadlands Bears Nursery has its own Nursery Manager and OFSTED registration, but all staff are part of the bigger Broadlands and AET family, allowing them to access additional and bespoke support and opportunities. Having a nursery on site is obviously rare for a secondary school but has enormous benefits. Where vocational education can be tokenistic in many schools, at Broadlands, students who study Child Development and Health and Social Care have specific sessions and unique opportunities in the nursery itself. The opportunity for students to gain experience in the nursery brings the learning of these courses to live and provides the context needed for them to embed their own learning and even be inspired along further educational routes in the future. Building on the success of the nursery, Broadlands Academy won the tender, from the local council, to run two additional educational provisions. These services are:

  • Hospital Education and Reintegration Service for B&NES (HERS) (Click here for a link to the HERS website)
  • The Primary Alternative Provision for B&NES (now named Endeavour) (Click here for a link to the Endeavour website)

The vision in running these services is an important one. Secondary schools can offer more to their community than the lessons they provide. Education has its largest impact with the most vulnerable and the most disadvantaged in society. These two provisions are key for delivering this targeted support and Broadlands has the moral responsibility to act. The vision is community. Having a secondary school, Nursery, SEN unit, Primary AP and Hospital Education based on site allows every service to develop, challenge and support the others. With the important contribution of AET, providing CPD and expertise in key areas, Broadlands has created a unique educational environment and we welcome you to have a tour of any provision on site.
