Phonics & Reading

Phonics

At Barton Hill Academy we follow the Sounds~Write phonics programme in Reception and Year 1.

Sounds-Write is a quality first phonics scheme and is acknowledged by the DfE as meeting all its criteria for an effective phonics teaching programme.

Sounds-Write is effective in teaching pupils to read, spell and write because it starts from what all children know from a very early age – the sounds of their own language. From there, it takes them in carefully sequenced, incremental steps and teaches them how each of the 44 or so sounds in the English language can be spelt.

For more information on the Sounds~Write programme visit their website HERE, We also deliver regular phonics training for parents so they can help support their children at home.

Phonic Books are decodable books to help beginner readers and older, struggling or reluctant readers. They are books a child can read independently once they have been taught the phonics at that level.

Decodable books consolidate the phonics taught in the classroom. With step-by-step progression, the pupil succeeds at each level while learning the phonics needed to become a fluent reader. This approach develops confident readers with reliable reading strategies.

At its heart, Renaissance Accelerated Reader is simple. A student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills.

We use Accelerated Reader at Barton Hill Academy to engage students with their reading, motivate reading practice, improve reading progress.
