The Maths Department is keen to ensure that all students leave the School with confidence in their mathematical abilities, an ability to think creatively and flexibly, and an appreciation for the subject.

We aim to deepen students’ understanding of core Mathematical principles through a mastery approach to learning by developing learners who are confident with the three strands of Mathematical thinking – fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

We develop learners to be confident Mathematical communicators who are able to independently explain, justify and reason and appreciate both the relevance of Mathematics and it’s abstract beauty.

Our students will be empowered to make sound Mathematical judgements and engage in the wider society by being brave, inquisitive and resilient.

KS4 & KS5 EXAM BOARDS

Key Stage 4

Maths GCSE (Core Subject)

At KS4 we follow the Edexcel (Pearson) Mathematics specification. This is a linear course - examinations are at the end of two years study and contribute to 100% of the grades awarded. There are two tiers of entry, Foundation Grades 1 - 5 and Higher Grades 4 - 9.

Foundation Edexcel 1MA1

Foundation Tier - Grades 1 - 5

  • Paper 1 (Non-Calculator) 1 hour 30 mins = 33% of the total grade

  • Paper 2 (Calculator) 1 hour 30 mins = 33% of the total grade

  • Paper 3 (Calculator) 1 hour 30 mins = 33% of the total grade

Higher Tier Edexcel 1MA1

Higher Tier - Grades 4 - 9

  • Paper 1 (Non-Calculator) 1 hour 30 mins = 33% of the total grade

Key Stage 5

Mathematics

Maths is one of the best subjects to develop your analytical, research and problem solving skills. Not only will maths give you the knowledge to tackle scientific, mechanical, coding and abstract problems, it will also help you develop logic to tackle everyday issues like planning projects, managing budgets and even debating effectively.

Assessment at AS and A2 is through written examination. The entire AS and A2 course is examined at the end of the Year 13. However there will be internal examination to ascertain students understanding of the units taught.


Further Mathematics

The subject goes well beyond the concepts of A-Level Maths introducing such topics as Imaginary Numbers; numbers that don’t exist. If you think that sounds weird then consider how numbers that don’t exist, turn up in formulae used by engineers and scientists to make their jobs easier. Intrigued? Most top rated university courses in sciences, engineering and Maths will want you to have studied Further Maths.

Assessment at AS and A2 is through written examination. AS results do not carry over to A2 and will only count if you choose not to continue Maths to A2. The entire AS and A2 course is examined at the end of the Year 13.

We are also delighted that department was a finalist in the Annual AET Maths Competition where they won the title in 2017.

How do we ensure we support the development of core skills?

At Aylward Academy, we deliver a mastery curriculum to all students. The vision is that every child is well prepared for their transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5 mathematics. We embed skills and have a specific focus on reasoning mathematically. We aim to deepen students’ understanding of core Mathematical principles through a mastery approach to learning by developing learners who are confident with the three strands of Mathematical thinking – fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

What motivates and interests our students?

Our students will be empowered to make sound Mathematical judgements and engage in the wider society by being brave, inquisitive and resilient.

A student of Mathematics at Aylward Academy will be prepared to undertake Mathematical challenges and methodically solve complex problems by creatively applying previously learnt skills and concepts.

Students who perform well in the termly assessments have the opportunity to move onto a higher learning pathway. Students who do not perform well and are at risk of falling short of their target are given additional support to help improve their achievement.

How do we ensure consistency across the key stages?

Students at Aylward Academy follow a mathematics curriculum that provides each student with a learning pathway. Each pathway provides differentiated learning objectives with a clear focus on progression in the learning of mathematics. All sets are given enrichment work to enhance their understanding of the underlying concepts, this provides an excellent preparation for the further study of advanced mathematics in the Sixth Form.

Progress of every student is closely monitored and tracked each term through a skills and knowledge assessment. Students are assessed at a level appropriate to their end of year target.
