Business Studies Department Objectives

Key Stage 4

GCSE Business Studies (Edexcel)

Students will study a 3 year course, cover two themes and sit two exams.

Theme 1: Investigating small business

Theme 1 concentrates on the key business concepts, issues and skills involved in starting and running a small business. It provides a framework for students to explore core concepts through the lens of an entrepreneur setting up a business

Theme 2: Building a business

Theme 2 examines how a business develops beyond the start-up phase. It focuses on the key business concepts, issues and decisions used to grow a business, with emphasis on aspects of marketing, operations, finance and human resources. Theme 2 also considers the impact of the wider world on the decisions a business makes as it grows.

Key Stage 5

Business A Level (Edexcel)

Students learn about types of business, marketing, finance, laws, human resources, operations management, accounting and the global environment.

Students are encouraged to read business newspapers, textbooks and learn through case studies. The subject develops skills such as problem solving, research, literacy, numeracy, analysis, evaluation and teamwork. The A level is assessed through three, two hour examinations based on the local business environment; the UK business environment and the global business environment.

BTEC Business

Students learn about a variety of Business topics such as Business Organisation, Business Communication, Recruitment, Market Research, Starting a Business and Human Resources. They will learn the theory in relation to real businesses and then produce coursework in a given time period. Students will develop a wide variety of skills including communication, problem solving, research, ICT, leadership, numeracy and literacy. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business consists of four units over two years. Unit 1 ‘Exploring Business’ is assessed internally via coursework. Unit 2 ‘Developing a Marketing Campaign’ is assessed externally; seeing students undertaking a six hour controlled assessment based upon a pre-released case study. Unit 3 ‘Personal and Business Finance’ is assessed externally via a two hour hand written exam. Unit 8 ‘Recruitment and Selection Process’ is assessed internally via coursework.
